Not common in the US or easy to breed, the hawk headed parrot inhabits the tropics of South America feeding on fruits, seeds, nuts, berries, leaf buds and vegetable matter. Most notably, this parrot is the only bird of the Western Hemisphere with a movable ruff like a cockatoo's crest. In anger or excitement, it raises or lowers its strikingly bright red, electric blue edged ruff (like an Indian headdress.)
