Peafowl are native to India, Congo, Burma, Malaya, Java and Ceylon. They belong to the pheasant family. As a rule peafowl and pheasants differ in their plumage. In the wild these birds live about 18 years.

Peafowl are hardy birds and can withstand extreme weather conditions without any serious problems. Females of these birds are called peahens; offspring under the age of 1 year are called peachicks. The common name of these birds refers to males. With proper care these birds can live up to forty years in captivity.
