In the wild, these birds are found in the palm groves of the Amazon basin. They feed almost exclusively on the palm nuts and nests in holes in the palms. These bright birds are very rare as pets, because they are difficult to breed and keep.

The correct taxonomy of this species is uncertain. For many years it was placed in the genus Ara because of the birds’ size and bald facial mask, but nowadays some scientists place it in the genus Orthopsittaca. So, the correct name of the species is Orthopsittaca manilata.
