Males are different from females in the appearance and the vocalization. Males are black with glistening green- or blue-tinted plumage and red eyes, and females are brown with white spots, black crowns and creamy striped chest. Young birds are much the same in appearance as females.

Koels belong to the Cuculiformes order, and they migrate to north-eastern Australia for breeding, and some of them stay there for winter. They arrive in Australia in early October, and leave in early in April. These birds are relatively large, and they can reach 45 cm in length.
