All males have wonderful bright red eyes. Females and young birds have brown backs with multiple white mottles, buff-cream barred chests and black crowns. Juveniles feature a larger proportion of white, black eyes, and females do not have loud voice.

Koels are 40-45 cm in length, and they have long tails and elongated bodies. Males and females differ in size (males are bigger) and in coloration. Males are black, and they have a glossy plumage, bearing a bluish or greenish tint. Available chicks photo and pictures can be taken from the breeder.
