Some bright duck species can be kept as pets and ornamentals. There are many breeds that have been developed with crests and tufts or striking plumage. Shows are held in which ducks are displayed. Most duck species are undemanding and can live feely in the garden, backyard or in a city park and feed on insects and slugs. It is a popular misconception that ducks should be fed bread. Bread has limited nutritional value and can be deadly when fed to developing ducklings, though in winter, feeding wild ducks bread helps them survive.

It is thought that all domestic ducks evolved from Mallards. Domestic ducks are about 50-60 cm. (20.5 -28 in.) long and males have brighter coloring than females. Females are plain and brown. They are kept mainly for meat and eggs. Just like other domestic animals, ducks are very useful to humans. They provide us not only with eggs and meat, but with feathers and down. Ducks usually eat snails, crabs, shrimps, barnacles, catch fish, dig for snails and eat other small crustaceans and some sea-weeds.
