Found from the Yukon to Newfoundland and from southern Victoria Island to US border, the birds cover great distances when migrating. Migration occurs in spring and late summer to fall. As a rule, 5 to 7 eggs are in a clutch with incubation period lasting for about 27 days.

Due to a wide variety of sub-species, these birds may differ in appearance in different parts of the country. In general, the species has a dark elongated body, a long neck with white patches, and crown. Larger sub-species may reach the weight of 8 kilos with smaller ones weighing a little more than 1 kilo.
