Nowadays, Bald eagles are out of danger, but in the 1960’s they were on the brink of extinction. There were only about 450 nesting pairs left. Being on the top of the food chain, Bald eagles accumulated toxic levels of lead, DDT and other dangerous agents from waterfowl and fish, which fed on contaminated plankton and plants. Other threats to Bald eagles are poaching for feathers, human encroachment and habitat destruction. This species prefers isolated places for breeding and nesting; when disturbed, Bald eagles often leave their nests.
