America Bald Eagle
The america bald eagle chicks are usually well protected by the mature birds.
This species feeds on fish and waterfowl and stands on the top of the food chain, so it accumulates large amounts of DDT, lead and other agents from their prey. These chemicals cause serious mutations and abnormal breeding behavior in these birds. In the 1960’s, there were only about 450 nesting pairs of these birds left. In some areas the decline of population approached 100%. Due to effective conservation measures, these birds managed to survive. This species was removed from endangered species list in 1995. In many states, the bird is classified as threatened nowadays, but the whole population of these predators has recovered after being on the brink of extinction in the 1960’s.
