Today, these magnificent birds are out of danger, but in the late 1960ís there were only about 450 nesting pairs. In many areas, the decline of population approached 100%. It happened because of contamination of their food source with DDT, lead and other agents. These predators have suffered more than other species, because being at the top of the food chain, they accumulated high levels of dangerous agents from their prey, which caused mutations, changes in breeding behavior and many other problems. A picture of american bald eagle can be found on most bird photo sites.
